The Role of Conservation Fencing in Protecting Wildlife Habitats

New Zealand is home to various unique animal species. From the beloved kiwi to the lizard-like tuatara, there are many iconic bird, reptile and insect species here that New Zealanders work hard to protect. The introduction of invasive species has harmed the populations of native species, even driving some to extinction. However, there are methods we can use to help protect animals in Aotearoa – such as conservation fencing.

What Is Conservation Fencing?

This fencing is designed to keep harmful predators and other animal species out of certain areas. It’s commonly used for wildlife preserves and conservation areas. This fencing is used all over the world, including in New Zealand and Australia, to protect vulnerable species.

New Zealand is unique in that it was once completely free of land mammals, with its wildlife mostly including birds, reptiles, amphibians and insects that evolved to fit the natural niches that mammals typically fill in other areas. However, humans have brought along land mammals like dogs, rodents and livestock. Unfortunately, this has hurt local wildlife, with some species going extinct because of predation and competition from invasive species.

Predation from introduced animals like dogs can devastate native species, especially considering these species did not evolve alongside the invasive species and are thus unprepared to handle them. Furthermore, even non-predator animals can harm NZ’s fauna. For example, invasive deer won’t actively hunt down birds or lizards, but they will consume resources alongside them, potentially making it harder for native wildlife to survive.

In New Zealand, thoughtful Kiwis are working hard to make a change for Aotearoa’s unique native species. Conservation fencing can be used to keep harmful species away from protected animals, allowing them to thrive as they once did many decades ago.

We at DFL Fencing are proud to help hardworking animal advocates with our sturdy, tailored fencing solutions. We supply fences for New Zealand properties, including rural areas, and have plenty of fences available that are specifically meant to control animals like horses, chickens, dogs and even deer. Deer can pose a threat to native life, and they can also threaten crops and farms.

There are two main types of fencing that we can use for conservation:

  • Predator-Proof Fencing. We can discuss the specific kinds of predators you’re trying to deter. Then, our experts can recommend the best type of fencing to keep these animals out.
  • Exclusion Fencing. This kind of fencing is used to prevent animals from accessing properties. Invasive herbivores can make life harder for native species by taking up resources. Additionally, they can also devastate crops and plants. Exclusion fencing is a must if your farm is in an area with hungry wild deer, feral goats and rabbits.

The Many Benefits Of Conservation Fencing For New Zealand Residents And Wildlife

Custom fencing created to meet your needs comes with plenty of advantages, especially when it’s made from high-quality materials and correctly installed:

  • Protecting Vulnerable Species. Sadly, many of Aotearoa’s native wildlife species are currently endangered or threatened due to invasive animals and habitat loss. Did you know that there are five species of kiwi? This beloved flightless bird has five variants, and four out of five of these species are currently threatened. Hardworking animal advocates have helped native fauna through conservation efforts, and conservation fencing can create safe, predator-free spaces where animals can live as their ancestors did.
  • Encouraging Ecosystem Recovery. Although herbivores like deer and feral goats may seem harmless at first, they can actually have a massive impact on the ecosystems they invade. They overgraze native plants, making it harder and harder for local flora and fauna to cope. Sturdy fences can keep these animals out, allowing the ecosystem to heal.
  • Supporting Species Reintroduction Programmes. One way in which we can help native animals is to reintroduce species that have been eradicated from the area. It’s difficult to do this when predators and competitors are still around, as these animals can end up hurting the reintroduced animals. With conservation fencing, we can create safe spaces for these reintroduced animals so they can survive.
  • Ecotourism And Education. Aotearoa is known for its beauty. From its incredible oceans to amazing mountains, it’s no surprise that many popular movies have been shot here. Of course, native species like kiwis and kakapo add to NZ’s charm, and many tourists travel here just to catch a glimpse of their favourite unique animal species. Creating sanctuaries with conservation fencing encourages people to come and learn about NZ’s efforts to protect species, raising awareness while supporting local economies.
